What is the plan for the magnolia tree in the courtyard? Will there be efforts to move the tree, include it in the design, or to remove the tree?

After exhaustive efforts to determine a way to save the Magnolia tree, it has been determined that it cannot be relocated during the renovation. A number of challenges exist in an attempt to save the tree. The root structure is broad and attempting to remove it would be almost impossible without the use of heavy equipment. Since the structural columns bays into the Stevenson Hall courtyard will be maintained navigating heavy equipment into the center of the building will be extremely difficult and expensive with the chance of saving the tree extremely low. The tree sits in the center of the planned 228 seat classroom and will have to be removed during construction. Efforts are being made to determine the appropriate place to memorialize the gift of SSU’s first graduating class.
